چکیده

INTRODUCTION U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions rose 16 percent between 1990 and 2004, while those from light-duty vehicles rose 23%. (EPA 2006) During the same period, GDP increased 51% (BEA 2005) and VMT rose 37% – more than doubling the nation’s population increase. (Davies et al. 2007 and EPA 2006) While GHGs are on the rise, public policy can result in substantial energy savings. U.S. Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, in place since 1978, have had a significant effect on GHG emissions, offering the U.S. steeper reductions per unit of GDP than many other countries during the 1990s. (Geller et al. 2006)

Contribution of cooperative sector recycling to greenhouse gas emissions reduction: a case study of Ribeirão Pires, Brazil.

Solid waste, including municipal waste and its management, is a major challenge for most cities and among the key contributors to climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced through recovery and recycling of resources from the municipal solid waste stream. In São Paulo, Brazil, recycling cooperatives play a crucial role in providing recycling services including collection, separatio...

Review of U.S. and European Regional Modeling Studies of Policies Intended to Reduce Transportation Greenhouse Gas Emissions

With the enactment of a new federal transportation law in 2005, State and regional transportation plans and programs are for the first time required to achieve the objectives of the SAFETEA-LU planning process, which focus on enhancing mobility and supporting economic development, while minimizing conventional emissions and greenhouse gas emissions. In 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court held that gre...

The limits of technology: Achieving transport efficiency in developing nations

Emissions from the transport sector represent the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions. There is little prospect that this situation will be resolved with a single technological fix. As developing nations quickly move to catch up with the motorisation levels of developed nations, the sheer number of private vehicles on the roadways will overwhelm any advances made by cleaner fuels...

Estimation of greenhouse gases emissions from urban traffic: a case study of Hamadan city

Background and Objective: Transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and CH4) which causes global warming. “Stop-and-go” driving and congested traffic flow results in a decrease in average car speeds, an increase in traffic incidents, and finally escalates GHGs emissions. Hence, congestion is directly related to carbon emissions. The objective of this stu...

An Integrated Approach to Transportation Policy in BC ASSESSING GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTIONS OPPORTUNITIES IN FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION

Transportation services are central to movement of goods and people in modern economies. Their provision embodies many tradeoffs between: economic benefits, health effects, social and environmental impacts. Policies aimed at achieving deep greenhouse gas emission reductions from the transportation sector will invariably impact the balance of these benefits and dis-benefits of transportation. Th...
